Hi all, I’m leading a community garden project in Manchester, and we just got a bunch of tall tapered grey concrete planters from Idealist Planters. They’re lightweight yet durable, and the frost resistance is a big plus for our park setting. We’re thrilled with how they look, but I’m struggling to decide what to plant in them for year-round interest. Any suggestions for plants that work well in these 65cm or 89cm tall pots? Also, has anyone used these for trees?

We used Idealist planters for a similar project in Sheffield, and they’ve been a hit. For our tall ones, we went with a mix of perennials like Salvia and ornamental grasses, which add texture and stay decent in winter. I’d avoid super heavy trees unless you’re sure the soil volume can support them—check Idealist’s site for the litre capacity (ours are 79L). Their delivery was fast, and the pots arrived in perfect condition. Good luck with your project!
Hi all! We're using planters in the UK for our community garden in Manchester too—those tall tapered grey concrete ones are fantastic! Super durable, lightweight, and they handle frost like a champ. For year-round interest, try combining evergreen grasses like Carex with seasonal flowers, or small shrubs like Skimmia or Euonymus. We've also had success planting dwarf conifers or small trees like Japanese maple in the 89cm pots—just ensure proper drainage and soil mix. Anyone else tried trees in these? Curious to hear how they’ve held up over time!
